Selected Digital Works 2006
This recent body of work explores the relationship between movement and form through digtial kinetic sculpture. The movements of the digital structures are similar to the evolution and growth of organic elements captured through time lapse photography. In sharp contrast to this natural movement, the mechanical forms have a relentless and precarious edge that is reflected In the surface, repetition of form and the growth of seemingly infinite shapes, that Is undoubtedly machine based. The aesthetic Intricacy of each sculpture could also be said to possess a duplicity, that changes between symmetrical beauty (the gentle movement reinforcing this) and an uneasiness that Is ascribed to the continually changing combination of forms that appears synthetic and uncontrollable. Such apparently opposite contrasts are concepts that my work investigates, particularly the parallels betweens material and immaterial elements and the precarious relationship they inhabit.
Perspective is utilised through manipulating the depth of field, blurring the rear of the electronic forms, this gives weight to its realistic existence in space. In juxtaposition to this, the blurring also creates flicker which is reminiscent of historical films. The viewer may see the work as highly contemporary, situated In a technology driven society, but the appearance of the flicker seems to create a scenario, whereby the viewer could imagine they are actually witnessing archival footage. The continuous looping of the animation mirrors the eternal movement of machines relentlessly repeating tasks and interrogates the viewers own experience of time. Through the looping techniques the boundaries that separate the end and beginning are blurred and this could be said to parallel non-linear elements.
The Dark Space
The Dark Space is an online gallery which contains digital works by the artist John Baugh. The work exhibited in this site explores the technology of combining 3D Modelling, 2D Digital imagery and Animation to create kinetic electronic art. The web space as a whole investigates the notions of online/electronic exhibits within a digital domain. The links connect to the present series of exhibits or sub-forms, these sub-forms are digital structures created using 3D modelling and animation software.
